SOAR 2020

Dear Prospective SOAR Student,

As you might already know, Brigham Young University has cancelled all on-campus programs and events this summer. However, the Multicultural Student Service (MSS) office is excited to offer our Summer College Preparation Program "SOAR" ONLINE! Although we understand you would have preferred a BYU on-campus experience, we feel our online opportunity will still help you identify academic goals, increase motivation for higher education, and learn how to best represent yourself in a college application. Please understand that although this years' summer program will be different, it will be filled with quality instruction and teaching to help you become competitive applicants for BYU.

Please note a CHANGE IN THE APPLICATION DEADLINE:

Since SOAR will now be completely online, and because of the current challenging circumstances, we have extended the deadline for the application to April 25, 2020. This extended deadline will allow participants who may not have been able to travel to BYU an opportunity to be considered for a SOAR experience. Due to the high volume of applications already submitted and the increase of applications we anticipate with the program being online, please go to the link below to let us know if you would like to be considered for the SOAR online 2020 program.

The SOAR online program will consist of a five-day virtual experience that will have a structured schedule of workshops, activities and classroom instruction. The program will include workshops about how to pay for college, different college majors or programs of study, how to fill out the BYU admissions application, and exposure to the MSS office services for students. We will also hold classroom instruction for ACT preparation to give you the best training to potentially improve your ACT score (please identify ACT dates in your home state to take the test as we would not be able to provide it). In addition, scheduled activities for SOAR include cultural discussions, team building exercises and exploring a day at BYU. Get ready for the first SOAR online experience!

Outlined are the prospective SOAR dates as previously determined. However, depending on the number of students admitted to SOAR, our dates may slightly change.
SOAR 2020 Program Dates

  • Session #1: June 22-26
  • Session #2: July 6-10
  • Session #3: July 13-17

COST: The cost for SOAR will be $95. Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch could apply for a $50 SOAR scholarship.

Lastly, we want you to keep in mind that our program is being created to be half a day and start in the Mountain Standard Time. A tentative time is from 10:00am-2:00pm. Again, we recognize that this may mean an "earlier" or "later" start and end time with the program for some of you. We can say with 100% surety that this will most definitely prepare you for college! We will keep you informed throughout the process on the specific schedule and we thank you for your patience, kindness and willingness to work with us during this time.

Sincerely,

Moises Aguirre - Director,
BYU Multicultural Student Services
