COUNSELOR QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Knowledge and appreciation of the BYU Mission and AIMS.
  2. Embodiment of the Pillars of SOAR and BYU Honor Code.
  3. Commitment to SOAR and understanding of the MSS office.
  4. Love and respect diverse cultural backgrounds.
  5. Academically competitive, maintain a 2.5 or higher GPA.
  6. Be a BYU young single adult student with no dependents.
  7. Must have a current ecclesiastical endorsement.
  8. Pass required background check for this position.
  9. Be a strong team player.
  10. Be available during required dates (See below).

APPLICATION DETAILS

The application includes six essays and two student scenarios. To make the process smoother:
Prepare Ahead. Draft your essay responses in a separate document and save them to your computer.

  • Copy and Paste: Once you reach the essay section, copy and paste your responses from your document into the application.
  • Double-Check: Ensure the entire essay is copied, formatted correctly, and adheres to the word limit.
  • Word Limit: Each essay must not exceed 1400 characters (approximately 250 words).

EMPLOYMENT DATES

SOAR counselors are expected to work during the following dates:

  • Lead Counselors: Starting Wednesday, May 28, 2025
  • All Counselors: Starting Tuesday, June 3, 2025
  • End Date: Friday, July 18, 2025

WAGES

  • Hourly Wage 2025: $16.50/hour for Lead SOAR Counselors.
  • Contracted 2025: $3345 for SOAR Counselors; $4075 for Lead SOAR Counselors.

    HOUSING AND MEALS

    On-campus housing and meals will be provided during in-person SOAR weeks only.

    • Residence Hall Requirement: Counselors are required to stay in residence halls during designated times:
      • Sunday, June 22nd through Friday, June 27th. Check-in Sunday at 4:00 pm with check-out Friday at 4:00 pm.
      • Sunday, July 6th through Friday, July 11th. Check-in Sunday at 4:00 pm with check-out Friday at 4:00 pm.
    • Weekend Housing: Counselors must arrange their own housing in-between sessions and over the weekends, as staying on the premises is not permitted.

    AVAILABILITY REQUIREMENTS

    Vacations or absences are not allowed during this period due to the workload and responsibilities.

    APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

    To receive an interview, you must:

    • Submit your resume and letter of recommendation to Rut Beltran, SOAR Counselor Coordinator.
    • Be prepared for a criminal background check and ecclesiastical clearance if selected as a final candidate.
