Tiago Bettencourt

Born in the middle of the Atlantic on Sao Miguel Island, Portugal, Tiago grew up mostly in Toronto, Canada. He’s an only child and a first-gen college student. He’s a senior majoring in Media Arts Studies and completing Honors too.

He loves God, his family, the ocean, cinema and surfing. He enjoys talking about all the latest, in theaters, movies and past films equally, and making movies too. Growing up, he watched many movies, many of which involved surfing. With the pull of the sea, he dreamed of surfing one day. In Summer 2022, he surfed for the first time and enjoyed it even more, despite wiping out and being slapped by a wave cresting over his head. He calls it his ‘surfing initiation.’

He loves working at BYU Multicultural Student Services because it’s where BYU’s diversity and differences shine the brightest. As film’s a collaborative medium, Honors is about connecting different disciplines, he sees BYU MSS as the place where any student can feel valued and belonging.

“It wasn’t about a ‘diversity acceptance.’ If you’re at BYU, it’s because you made it on your own merit and truly belong here. There is value and a place for you at BYU
