SOAR Counselors

SOAR, or Summer of Academic Refinement, is a college-preparation program offered three times during the summer for qualified high school students of various talents and backgrounds, including geographic, educational, cultural, ethnic, and racial who are considering attending BYU. 


Peer Counselors will be chosen based upon the following criteria:                                                                                             

  • Have completed 4 semesters at BYU by the end of winter semester 2018
  • OR be a returned missionary or transfer student with 2 semesters of BYU experience
  • Have and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Be a single BYU student
  • Pursue achievement of the Aims of a BYU Education
  • Understand the significance of and observe the Honor Code
  • Have prior experience with leadership, service, and/or involvement programs:
    • MSS Cultural programs
    • BYUSA
    • YServe
    • Academic Clubs

Job Description

Major Responsibilities:

  • Guide SOAR students through the established curriculum/program
  • Exemplify leadership and guidance
  • Be a good example of BYU
  • Chaperone students during evening activities and in the residence halls
  • Meet and attend to all student participants' needs
  • Help SOAR students deal with homesickness
  • Answer questions about BYU
  • Discipline for inappropriate behavior
  • Accept assignments from the Coordinator and Lead Counselors
  • Assist in the planning, organization, and conducting of SOAR activities and events
  • Attend all SOAR training sessions before SOAR and all scheduled events during SOAR
  • Provide a safe and appropriate environment
Special Skills or Knowledge Required:
  • Organizational, interpersonal, and problem solving skills
  • Office skills: campus phone, computer competency, typing, etc.
  • Proficient computer skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Docs
  • Excellent listening, written and verbal communication skills
  • Understanding of how the Honor Code affects campus life and character development
  • Knowledge of BYU campus

SOAR Schedule

SOAR counselors will be expected to begin work on Tuesday, May 29th, 2018 and to work through Friday, July 27th, 2018.  Counselors are required to live in the residence halls June 24th - June 29th, and then July 8th - July 20th.  Vacations or absences during these times will not be permissible due to the work load and expected responsibilities.  Counselors MUST be available the following times:

   May 29 - June 22 (weekdays)

3:00pm - 6:00pm

   June 1 - 2

Overnight retreat

   June 25 - 29

24 hour/day (Session #1)

   July 2 - 6

8:00am - 1:00 pm

   July 10 - 14

24 hour/day (Session #2)

   July 17 - 21

24 hour/day (Session #3)

   July 25-28        

9am – 2:00pm

Lead Counselors are expected to start working on May 21st from 3:00-6:00pm.


Counselors will be compensated approximately $3,200 for the 10-week work period. Housing is provided during the SOAR sessions, checking in Sunday and the option to stay over Friday night.  Meals are included the 3 weeks of SOAR.

Selection and Training

Interested candidates must complete and submit (1) the online application, (2) a resume and (3) one letter of recommendation by Monday, January 15th, 2018.  Interviews will be conducted and candidates selected by March 5th, 2018.
