What is Freshman Retreat?

The mission of the Multicultural Student Services (MSS) Freshman Retreat is to assist freshman with the transition from high school to college and to establish the Aims of a BYU education as the underlying foundation by which students approach their BYU experience. As freshman understand and apply these Aims during their first year they will be prepared with the necessary information, skills and relationships to develop themselves, share with others, and be successful as they move forward to graduation and serve in the kingdom.

Freshman Retreat Objectives

  1. Establish immediate contact with new freshmen upon admission to BYU and provide information that empowers them to be prepared for their arrival to campus.
  2. Provide an environment where freshmen can develop lasting relationships with MSS staff, other BYU staff and faculty, and fellow students, that will encourage holistic development within the Aims of a BYU education.
  3. Provide opportunities for upperclassmen volunteers to mentor and assist freshmen.
  4. Within the culture of Christ, provide an environment that encourages students to openly explore, learn and share their cultural heritage and life experiences.
  5. Retain 100% of the MSS freshmen participants as they move into their second year.
