General Questions

  1. What are the SOAR 2010 dates?
    • Session #1 June 21-26
    • Session #2 June 28-July 3
    • Session #3 July 12-17
  2. How much does it cost to attend SOAR?
    • $350 
    • Need-based scholarships available
  3. What does the cost cover?
    • Food and housing accommodations will be provided in campus residence halls. Two participants will share each room. Bedding and towels are furnished, and central bath facilities are provided. Meals will be served three times each day in a nearby cafeteria.
    • The SOAR program fee also provides for field trips, ACT prep classes, ACT test, and all other materials.
  4. Are scholarships available?
    • Yes, we offer two need-based scholarships - tuition and travel.
      1. Tuition Scholarship - $300.00 (The student must pay the remaining $50)
        • To qualify, a student must provide the following:
          1. Documentation of Free or Reduced Lunch Program participation OR
          2. Parent letter explaining family's extenuating circumstances AND a letter from family's bishop endorsing family's financial situation.
            • Travel Scholarship #1 - Up to $225 - live 750 to 1400 miles from BYU
            • Travel Scholarship #2 - Up to $300 - live 1400+ miles from BYU
              • (Eligible students will receive up to $225 or $300 to assist with student travel expenses to and from SOAR. Students will receive reimbursement after submitting approved travel receipts at SOAR).
              • Travel Scholarship will cover:
                • Air, bus, shuttle fare
                • Gasoline, if driving
                • Rental Car expense
              • Travel Scholarship will not cover:
                • Lodging before and after SOAR
                • Meals
                • Motels/Hotels
        1. Is SOAR related to EFY or any other BYU summer program?
          • No. Soar is not related to other programs such as EFY.

         

        Qualifications

        1. Who can attend SOAR?
          1. Have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.2 (unweighted), including grades 9-11
          2. Be a high school junior during 2009-2010 school year
          3. Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
          4. Come from a multicultural background or demonstrate a strong fit within the University Statement on Fostering an Enriched Environment
        2. Can high school seniors attend SOAR?
          • No. SOAR is only for high school juniors during the summer after their junior year.
        3. I have learning disabilities - am I eligible to attend SOAR?
          • Yes. All students that meet the requirements may attend. Accommodations are available for special needs.
        4. Do I need to take the ACT to be eligible to attend SOAR?
          • No. Students do not need to have taken the ACT to attend SOAR. Students will take the ACT as part of SOAR. We do recommend taking the ACT 2-3 times before applying for college.
        5. I do not have the required GPA - can I still apply?
          • Because of limited space, applicants must have the required GPA.  Please contact the SOAR program if you would like to discuss this requirement.

        Application Process

        1. I do not have access to the internet - can I register with a paper application?
          • Yes. You may call (801) 422-3065 to request a registration packet. Please provide your complete mailing address and your full name.
        2. I am not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - do I need to be interviewed by an LDS Bishop?
          • No. All applicants must submit an Ecclesiastical Recommendation completed by a clergy of their own faith or by an LDS Bishop.
        3. I have tried to submit the application online, but I have had problems with the computer - can I get a hard copy of the application?
          • Yes. Email us at soar@byu.edu or call (801) 422-3065 to request a registration packet and provide your complete mailing address and your full name. You can also send a printout of the online application.
        4. Can I change SOAR sessions after having already registered for a session?
          • Yes. Students may change sessions up to two weeks before SOAR begins. Email or call the Multicultural office requesting the change. We will accommodate your request as long as space is available.
        5. When do I have to pay the $350?
          • You can pay either when applying or after your acceptance. If you pay when applying and are not accepted, your fee will be reimbursed. Your space cannot be guaranteed until payment is received.
        6. Can I pay the SOAR fee with a credit card?
          • Yes
        7. When is the deadline to apply for SOAR?
          • The deadline to apply for SOAR is May 1, 2010


        Miscellaneous

        1. Can I choose a roommate?
          • Please contact us for any special needs at 801-422-3065. Typically we discourage rooming with friends or family so that you can get to know others.
        2. Is early housing available?
          • If transportation scheduling requires students to arrive early, they may stay in the residence halls up to two days and must pay a fee of $21 per person per night. Meals are available in the cafeteria for a moderate price. Contact Student Auxiliary Services at (801) 422-5671 to make early arrival arrangements.
        3. What if I arrive late?
          • If students arrive after the Orientation on Monday morning, they must go to the Multicultural Student Services in 1320 WSC. This office is located on the first floor in the Wilkinson Student Center.
        4. Is there a BYU shuttle service from the Salt Lake City Airport to BYU?
          • BYU does not provide shuttle services between Salt Lake City and Provo. Private shuttle services between the airport and Provo are available. Students must contact them directly. Express Shuttle can be contacted at (800) 397-0773. It is up to each student to find his or her own transportation to and from BYU.
