Mission & Objectives

Mission

BYU Multicultural Student Services Celebration of Culture is designed to enhance awareness of and appreciation for diverse cultures, heritages, backgrounds, and life experiences. We provide an environment of “intensive learning in a stimulating setting” (University Statement on Fostering an Enriched Environment) where students will apply their unique talents and strengths. We support and encourage students to share and learn more about one another in an atmosphere where all come together to deepen understanding and spirituality, benefit from cultural exchanges, and develop and sustain lifelong relationships.

Objectives

  1. Education
    1. Provide students with an opportunity to have an active learning experience, where they “…bring their life experiences into the learning process, reflect on their own and others’ perspectives as they expand their viewpoints, and apply new understandings to their own lives.” (Blimling, Whitt, & Associates, p. 21)
  2. Inclusion
    1. Promote the learning and sharing of the diverse cultures, heritages, backgrounds, and life experiences of each participant.
    2. Provide an environment where interpersonal and intercultural relationship skills are developed and strengthened; where there is a sense of concern and responsibility one for another.
    3. Maintain an environment where organizers, volunteers, BYU campus community, and participants feel that they “…are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens.” (University Statement on Fostering an Enriched Environment)
  3. Student Development
    1. Provide an environment where students can improve collectively and individually within The Aims of a BYU education.
